Is n8n an iPaaS? A Criteria-Based Review for Technical and IT Leads
Is n8n an iPaaS? This review checks n8n against Gartner's criteria to clarify what iPaaS integration requires and where n8n's capabilities fall short.

What is iPaaS integration — and does n8n meet Gartner's checklist?
Is n8n an iPaaS? The short answer is that n8n documents some of what buyers expect from that label, but not all of it, and which parts apply depends heavily on which plan or edition you're evaluating. Gartner's own glossary, updated in 2026, defines an integration platform as a service primarily as a vendor-managed cloud service that lets end users build integrations themselves, rather than a toolkit a team has to run and patch on its own.
That same glossary lists mandatory features a platform must offer to earn the iPaaS label, including role-based access control tooling to govern who can touch platform resources. In our view, treating iPaaS as a single yes-or-no badge is the wrong starting question for a procurement checklist; what actually matters is whether each specific capability your team needs — managed hosting, RBAC, a given connector — shows up in the edition you're about to buy.

Connector depth: what n8n documents, and where its own numbers disagree
Connector catalog size is one of the easiest iPaaS criteria to check, and n8n's own pages disagree on it. n8n's marketing integrations page lists 2,312 integrations under the tagline connecting anything to everything, though that count sits on a marketing page with no stated publication date and can change without notice.
n8n's GitHub README states a different figure: 1,500+ integrations alongside more than 9,000 workflow templates. Neither page explains the gap, so a buyer citing an exact connector count for n8n should re-check it directly on the current integrations page rather than trusting either source as final.
n8n's own GitHub repository tags itself with the topic ipaas, alongside labels like integration framework and low-code — a category the maintainers chose themselves, not a third-party classification.

Managed infrastructure and governance: what's free vs. plan-gated

Gartner's definition centers on a vendor-managed runtime, which is the clearest place to test the is-n8n-an-iPaaS question against your own deployment plans. n8n's documentation describes n8n Cloud as fully hosted by n8n, which matches that vendor-managed criterion directly.
Self-hosted n8n is the opposite case: the same documentation states that customers must provide and manage their own infrastructure, the reverse of what Gartner's iPaaS framing assumes. A team running self-hosted n8n is operating infrastructure itself, not simply consuming a managed service.
Governance tooling follows a similar split. n8n's documentation says the free, self-hosted Community edition includes almost the complete feature set of the product, but several items are gated to paid plans or editions.
- SSO (SAML, LDAP) is listed among the features requiring a paid plan and is confirmed absent from the free Community edition.
- Git-based version control is listed among the features requiring a paid plan rather than the free Community edition.
- Project-level RBAC roles are available on self-hosted Registered Community, Business and Enterprise editions, and on all n8n Cloud plans.
- Custom RBAC roles, finer-grained than the built-in roles, are limited to n8n Cloud Enterprise and self-hosted Enterprise.
- Multi-main high-availability queue mode is a self-hosted Enterprise feature only; n8n's documentation states it isn't available on n8n Cloud.
In our view, gating SSO, Git-based version control and fine-grained RBAC behind paid tiers is a reasonable trade-off given how much the Community edition keeps free, but it means a team can't treat n8n as one governance profile — the edition and plan in front of you decide what's actually available.

Pricing model and where analysts place n8n
n8n's pricing model is another departure from the classic iPaaS pattern. A 2026 vendor pricing guide from JetAdmin states that n8n bills by workflow execution, counting one full workflow run rather than charging separately for each step inside it, so a complex multi-step workflow doesn't cost more per run than a simple one. Execution-based billing is one input into the broader difference between iPaaS and SaaS integration tools, and it's worth checking each vendor's own pricing page rather than assuming either label implies a fixed pricing structure.
Is n8n an iPaaS in analysts' own categorization? The signals below summarize what the available sources show.
- n8n's Gartner Peer Insights page sits under the Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies market category, not a dedicated iPaaS category page.
- The vendor-provided description on that Peer Insights page calls n8n a workflow automation platform focused on business process automation with AI integration, not an iPaaS.
- A consultancy's October 2025 comparison guide recommends enterprise iPaaS for integrations spanning multiple business units with heavy governance needs, reserving n8n for faster, departmental workflows.
- A single-author 2025 paper in the International Journal of Computer Applications reports its own benchmark tests finding linear scalability and over 98% reliability for n8n in the integration and AI orchestration scenarios it tried.
- A vendor blog from Getint, paraphrasing Gartner's 2025 Magic Quadrant, states one inclusion criterion requires at least half of a vendor's iPaaS revenue to come from third-party application integration.
We'd treat the benchmark figures above as one researcher's reported numbers rather than an independently replicated result, since the journal has limited independent peer vetting and the full methodology isn't available.
n8n's license adds another wrinkle beyond those category signals. Its GitHub repository runs under a fair-code Sustainable Use License plus a separate Enterprise License, not an OSI-approved open-source license, and the license text restricts use to internal business purposes or non-commercial use, barring resale as a hosted offering.

Verdict by criterion: who n8n suits as-is
Putting the criteria side by side shows why asking is n8n an iPaaS doesn't have one single answer — it has one answer per row.
| Criterion | Gartner's iPaaS expectation | What n8n documents | Fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed runtime | Vendor manages the runtime infrastructure | n8n Cloud is fully hosted by n8n; self-hosted n8n requires the customer to provide and manage infrastructure | Partial — Cloud only |
| Governance (SSO, Git, custom RBAC) | Built-in access-control tooling included | Gated to paid self-hosted plans or n8n Cloud Enterprise; the free Community edition omits SSO | Partial — plan-dependent |
| Connector catalog | A documented, consistent connector count | n8n's marketing site states 2,312 integrations; its GitHub README states 1,500+ | Documented but inconsistent |
| Pricing model | Often priced per connection or per app | Billed per workflow execution, regardless of step count | Different model |
| Analyst category | Listed or assessed within Gartner's iPaaS category | Gartner Peer Insights lists n8n under Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies; vendor description calls it a workflow automation platform | Not labeled iPaaS on this page |
Before accepting or rejecting the label, run the following checks against your own procurement list:
So, is n8n an iPaaS across every criterion? Not quite: it clears the vendor-managed-runtime row only on n8n Cloud, clears governance rows only above certain plans, and documents connector counts that don't match each other across its own pages — the same dividing line a 2025 consultancy guide and Gartner's own category placement both point to, between a team-level workflow platform and an enterprise iPaaS tested across business units.
